There is no dress code imposed on tourists in Morocco. But it is a conservative country, and the FCDO asks travellers to follow local dress codes, noting that during Ramadan clothing that does not meet them may cause more offence. What to wear comes down to where you are going and when.
What is the weather like, season by season?
| Season in Marrakech | Average high / low | What to pack |
|---|---|---|
| December to February | 20-21 °C / 5-7 °C | Jumper or light puffer for evenings, trousers, closed shoes |
| March to May | 23-30 °C / 9-15 °C | Layers: T-shirt by day, light jacket at night |
| June to August | 33-39 °C / 17-21 °C | Loose cotton or linen that covers, hat, sunglasses |
| September to November | 24-33 °C / 10-18 °C | As in spring; a warm layer by November |
Days and nights are far apart. Italy's travel advice adds that nights are very cold in the desert and that the Atlas gets heavy snow in winter.
By place
- Medina and souks. Our advice: shoulders and knees covered, for women and men alike. Light trousers or a long skirt, a short-sleeved top and a scarf in your bag. Closed shoes: the lanes are cobbled and busy.
- Mosques. Most mosques in Morocco are closed to non-Muslims; the few that open to visitors expect covered arms and legs, and a headscarf for women.
- Beach. Swimwear stays on the beach or at the pool; cover up to walk into town. A one-piece draws less attention on public beaches.
- Hotel, riad, pool. Wear what you like inside.
- Desert and Atlas. Warm layers for the night, even in spring; a scarf against sand and sun; walking shoes.
What to wear in Morocco as a woman
Tourists are not asked to wear a headscarf. Loose clothes that cover draw fewer looks and keep the sun off. A light scarf does everything: sun, mosque visits, air conditioning. Germany's advice suggests women travelling alone keep a reserved manner.
What not to wear
- Swimwear, crop tops or very short shorts away from the beach and pool.
- Clothing with slogans about religion or politics.
- Expensive jewellery on show in crowded souks: the FCDO warns of thefts in big cities.
During Ramadan
Dress more conservatively than usual and avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public during fasting hours outside tourist places. See Ramadan in Morocco.
