Most travellers want two things in Morocco: cheap mobile data, and their usual number still working for bank codes, WhatsApp verification and the odd call. A data-only eSIM next to your home SIM does exactly that, if the two lines are set up correctly.
How the two lines split the work
- Your home SIM keeps your number: it receives calls and SMS as usual (your carrier may charge roaming for calls you make or receive).
- The eSIM carries your mobile data. Our plans give 1 GB a day at full 4G/5G speed, then 512 Kbps until the daily reset, with no total cap.
- WhatsApp, iMessage, Signal stay tied to your usual number: they only need internet, which the eSIM provides.
Setting up an iPhone
- Settings → Mobile Data → Mobile Data: select the eSIM line.
- Settings → Mobile Data → eSIM line: turn Data Roaming on. It costs nothing on the eSIM; it simply lets the eSIM use Moroccan networks.
- Settings → Mobile Data → your home line: turn Data Roaming off. This is the line that would bill roaming data.
- Keep Allow Mobile Data Switching off. If it is on, the phone can move data to your home line when the eSIM signal dips, and your carrier can bill roaming.
- Default voice line: your home line, so calls and SMS keep working on your number.
Setting up Android
- Settings → Connections (or Network & internet) → SIM manager: set Mobile data to the eSIM.
- On the eSIM line, turn Roaming on; on your home line, turn data roaming off.
- Turn off any "Auto data switch" or "Data during calls" option that could move data to your home SIM.
- Keep calls and SMS on your home SIM.
What a data-only eSIM cannot do
- It has no phone number: no Moroccan number, no normal calls, no SMS on the eSIM itself.
- Your bank's SMS codes arrive on your home SIM, so keep it switched on.
- Emergency calls go through your home line; the phone routes them over any available network.
Checking it works on arrival
- Turn Wi-Fi off and load a web page: if it opens, the eSIM is carrying your data.
- Send yourself a WhatsApp message and check it arrives.
- If there is no connection, toggle airplane mode for thirty seconds, then check the eSIM is still selected as the data line.
